History

Goderich was founded in 1827, and with almost 200 years of stories, events, and local legends, the history of our town runs deep. We are lucky enough to have the Huron County Museum (link to https://www.huroncountymuseum.ca/) right here in town to offer visitors an immersive and expansive view into the area’s past. Their sister location, the Huron Historic Gaol, is another must see for any history buff visiting Goderich.

The Town of Goderich has Heritage Walks and audio tours listed on their website, as well as information on Marine Heritage.

In a hurry? Here are some quick ways to take in a slice of Goderich’s past:

  • Admire the centuries old stained-glass windows at St. George’s Anglican Church and St. Peter’s Catholic Church.
  • Get off the beaten path and climb to visit Sr. William “Tiger” Dunlop’s grave.
  • Stop into the Bedford Hotel on the Square, one of Goderich’s original hotels.
  • Dine at Beach Street Station, located inside an original CPR station decorated with old photos and artifacts.
  • Visit the cenotaph and see the old train station where Goderich and Huron County’s WW1 161st Battalion left to go overseas.
  • Take a walk and search for historical and heritage buildings downtown and along the bluff.
  • Grab a drink in one of Huron County’s oldest buildings, The Park House, built in 1837 and currently operating as a pub.
